Allison Mankowski, MPH, RDN, CSSD the owner of a nutrition counseling practice located in Plymouth, MI. Prior to her current role, she was the Director of Performance Nutrition at Eastern Michigan University for 11 years. She has also served as a consultant dietitian for the Detroit Lions, partnered with many local gyms, clubs high schools and universities, presented at national conferences, given guest lectures, been featured in various forms of media and is also the author of the ebook, Eating Disorders in Athletes: How to Recognize, Intervene and Prevent.
Prior to becoming a registered dietitian, Allison received her BS in Movement Science from the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology, with an additional concentration in psychology and her MPH in Human Nutrition/Dietetics from the Michigan’s School of Public Health where she also completed her Dietetic Internship.
In her free time, Allison enjoys spending time outdoors and attending sporting events with her family. As a lifelong athlete, she continues to stay active in weightlifting, biking, running, yoga and hiking, as well as coaching a youth cheerleading program.
Special Considerations in Treating Athletes with Eating Disorders
The rates of eating disorders in athletes have been shown to be higher than rates in the general public. Although many aspects of treatment of EDs for athletes are similar to non-athletes, there are a number of special considerations to be aware of when helping athletes recover and continue with their sport.
